Save Our Rivers

          We are using our as our sewer system. If you ask a Filipino, “are the Filipinos a clean people” The answer is an automatic, yes” however, the Filipinos are suffering from the same disease attitude as most people do, and that is the “NIMBY” disease or nimby attitude.Nimby not in my back yard. So it is ok to dump my garbage and sewer there. Not mine someone else will take care of it.

           

         This attitude is killing our rivers. You great grandparents, grandparents or parents were once proud to tell the stories of how they enjoyed swimming in the river behind your house or nearby. However, you can’t say the same or tell the same stories of your kids or grand kids. 

Mountainous Area of Laua-an

           The Philippine is a tropical country and particularly anything will grow. The DENR has the planning trees project that goes on every year. Lots of picture taking for the media. Planting trees one by one is the “human” way of doing it. This individual planting trees is good if done to line, the roads and highways with trees or along fences or property divisions, or if you have a plantation. To reforest the nation of the Philippines we have to plant trees and the “mother nature” way. Sow the seeds during the rainy season.

     Let us plant more trees in every barangay in the entire Philippines. It does not make any difference if the barangay is urban, partially urban or rural; we need more trees. Trees will prevent erosion, provide oxygen, and prevent green house effect and even a place of business for the shade tree mechanic.

Laua-an, Antique

      

    Laua-an and did not seem to have any specific landmarks, it was very impressive for the obvious pride that the residents and there government took in their town. Everything’s was neat, clean and well maintained. The immaculate central school was a very symbol of the importance that parents, Teachers, Students place and educating the children of Laua-an.

         With only few exceptions, We found that the communities of Antique province, which certainly must not be wealthy, were product of their home painted, landscape, neat, clean and free of litter.

          Like kids, we are studying our mouths full of with bars of Bandi , Antiques our own version of Panutsa. Locals stir pots filled with melted muscovado sugar; unbelievable, they’re still preparing more sweets for our consumption. It was the last activity for the second day of katahum tours’ manggad kang Antique heritage tour and we simply cant say no to ending the day with nothing but sweet .Besides pairing muscovado with coffee. Its also an excellent ingredient for making local sweets. At a gym somewhere  in Laua-an , we were treated to such delicates. Everything was cooked and prepared right in front of us, and yes even let us participate in making it.

Laua-an Pahinis Festivals

Sugarcane

Pre Catholic pre Spanish-era Pahinis Festival is similar to Makar Sankranti, is being celebrated annually to feature the muscovado sugar industry of the town, the technology of which dates back to the Spanish era. “Pahinis” means to clean and prepare the tools for sugarcane milling which corresponds to a celebration to thank god for fine harvest of sugarcane.

The town celebrates its centennial foundation in every January. Weeklong celebration features pahinis festival Marde gras; LGU, professionals, senior citizens and barangay night, bugal kang Laua-an (Pride of Laua-an). Awards night, and search for hara de pahinis (Pahinis queen) beauty pageant and coronation night. The winner of this pageant represents the municipality during the search for Lin-ay kang Antique (Miss Antique) during Binirayan Festival in the capital town of San Jose de Buenavista every last week of December.

When I’m taking the photos of this mountain I can say it is beautiful in shape. It is the only high mountain that can be found in my native home in Barangay Latazon, Laua-an, Antique. This mountain is known as a “Tumangob” . If want to go there then travel by foot it is three to four hours of walking but if travel through the use of transportation it is one and a half hour before you reach its destination. Motorcycle is your first choice to ride on because the paths are mountainous, high, zigzag in form and at nowadays it is under construction. Our municipal mayor have budgeted  for the construction and improvement of our farm road to main road.  Tumangob Mountain has its own grassland and at the peak of it has a big stone.  It is flat and wide wherein trees and plants can grow well.

When you are already visited  in our barangay it has three “purok” the “Daan”, “sentro”, and “Bag-o”. the people in our barangay are helping with each other to improve the cleanliness and beautification of ourbarangay. They also do “bayanihan” if there are problems I our barangay. There’s also a hanging bridge, Kalahi CIDS project that they are finish and also has a water tank to sustain the people are surrounded in this barangay.  I am not glad because of the one problem, that is our barangay road are didn’t finish yet into a concrete one. The hanging bridge is already finish and motorcycle can cross there.

               The town primarily agricultural with rice, sugarcane and corn as primarily crops. Monggo beans, peanuts and vegetables are also grown in limited areas of the land. Laua-an has the most number of sugarcane mills in the whole province of Antique. The town has the potential for large scale production of muscovado for local consumption and for export in other provinces and outside the country. Some sugarcane  mills in the town also has some refined way of milling muscovado sugar through technology transfer from foreign and such that residence. Free muscovado sugar is now produced that can reach markets in Manila, Boracay, Cebu and other areas in the Visayas,Luzon, and even Mindanao.

            The deep sea waters of Sulu Sea is abundant with fish and marine life like sardines, tuna, squids, mackerel, crabs and other seafoods which is a source of living for most residents.

                     The town of several unexploited natural beauty, including mountains and sea, which have a potential for tourism in the future. The coastline is fine gray sand with pebbles and stone ideal for swimming. It has large rivers with clean waters, stream verdant plains, mountain and hills, as well as lush forest teeming with wild life. Among the tourist actions Estaka hill in poblacion and waterfall in Barangay San Ramon. Estaka hill in the poblacion provides a strategic place to view the barangay poblacion. When you want to visit the Estaka of poblacion it is near from municipality of Laua-an. If you are in the municipal hall of Laua-an the Estaka is clear view when you are looking. When you want to see the falls in San Ramon it is can be found at 2^nd to the last part barangay,s of Laua-an Municipality. When you walked starting at poblacion until there, it is 4 hours to travel. A place wherein there’s a lot of beautiful places to view. Nobody’s are exploring there because it is far from our town. In entering that place you must travel with the help of motorcycle as a source of you transportation.

Laua-an Municipal Hall

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               The sceneries of Laua-an Municipality, Laua-an is the fourth class municipality. It has a population of 26, 072 people.

                Laua-an celebrates its Pahinis Festival in every January. The Pahinis Festival was awarded as one of the best tourism events in the Philippines. “Madrigas” known as dancing that composed of different tribes from different schools. It is also a dancing that symbolizes the importance of everyone’s beliefs and traditions. Miss Hara de Laua-an, there’s different faces and beauty that symbolizes the tradition and nature of the event.  Every contestants wear suitable costumes related to the tribes where they belong and to represent the beautiful scenery of their own history.

                The last one’s a “Muscovado Sugar” came from the sugar care this is the product of Laua-an they purchase on every year. During the event they display it on the exhibit. This sugar was pure and tastes sweet. They also used to make “Bandi” and “Butong-butong” that’s why Laua-an is a popular in Antique.
